Robert Atkins was a well-known American doctor and cardiologist. A cardiologist is a medical expert who focuses on the heart. He became famous for creating a special way of eating. This plan is called the Atkins Diet. It changed how many people in the United States thought about food. Because his diet plan was so successful, Time magazine named him Person of the Year in 2002.

The Atkins Diet works by changing what a person eats every day. It is a low-carbohydrate diet. This means people must closely control how many carbohydrates they eat. Carbohydrates are found in foods like bread and sugar. Instead of many carbs, the diet uses protein and fat as the main sources of energy. People also eat a controlled amount of carbohydrates from vegetables.

Atkins had a very interesting path to becoming a doctor. He was born in 1930 in Columbus, Ohio. As a teenager, he held many different jobs. He sold shoes when he was 14 years old. He even worked on a local radio show. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1951, he almost became a comedian. He eventually earned his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in 1955.

His medical career began in New York City in 1959. At first, his private practice did not go very well. During this time, he began to gain weight and felt sad. He did research on a low-carbohydrate approach used by Alfred W. Pennington. Atkins started using this method in his own practice. He wrote his first book about this diet in 1972.

Later in life, Atkins faced some difficult health challenges. In 2002, he experienced a cardiac arrest. Some critics thought his diet caused this event. However, Atkins believed a chronic infection was the real cause. In April 2003, he fell on ice and hit his head. He went to Weill Cornell Medical Center for surgery. He died on April 17, 2003, at the age of 72.
