It lived from 8.5 million years ago until about 2 million years ago. These animals lived in Africa, Asia, and Europe. They were a type of gomphothere. A gomphothere is an ancient relative of the elephant.

Their name means "straight tusks." This is because their tusks were not curved. The tusks were long and slender. Some species had tusks that pointed forward. Others had tusks that pointed out to the sides. Their skulls looked like modern elephant skulls. They likely had long, hanging trunks to help them eat.

What they ate depended on where they lived. Some species ate twigs, bark, seeds, and fruit. These are called browsers. Other species ate grass. These are called grazers. In Africa, they may have died out because of other elephants. Those elephants had teeth that were better at eating grass. The last Anancus lived in Europe. They disappeared about 2 million years ago.
