Amur plate

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Earth has many large pieces. One piece is the Amur plate. It is a minor tectonic plate. A tectonic plate is a large piece of Earth's outer shell. This plate is named after the Amur River. That river is a border for China and Russia.

Many other plates touch the Amur plate. The Eurasian plate is to the north and west. The Okhotsk plate is on the east. The plate is also near the Philippine Sea plate. It is near the Okinawa plate and the Yangtze plate. This plate is a part of the larger Eurasian plate.

Scientists use GPS to study how it moves. The plate is slowly rotating. It turns in a counterclockwise way. This movement can cause the ground to shake. It may have been part of two big earthquakes. These happened in China in 1975 and 1976.

The Amur plate sits under many places. It is under northeast China and the Korean Peninsula. It is under the Sea of Japan too. It sits under parts of Japan like Shikoku and Kyushu. It also covers parts of Mongolia and the Russian Far East.
