Amborella

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Amborella is a very special plant. It grows on the island of New Caledonia. This plant is a small tree or a bush.

Scientists find it very interesting. It is the closest relative to all other flowering plants. This means it branched off from other flowers a long time ago. It is like a living link to the past.

Amborella has unique parts. Its wood lacks vessel elements. These are tiny tubes that carry water. Most other flowering plants have them.

The flowers are small and creamy white. Each plant has only one kind of flower. Some plants have male flowers. Other plants have female flowers. This is called being dioecious.

Female flowers make small red fruit. Each fruit has one seed inside. These plants use wind and insects to pollinate. This helps them make new seeds. Scientists study its genes to learn about the history of all flowers.
