AM radio was the first way to send sound through the air.

It uses a method called amplitude modulation. This is also known as AM. This way works by changing the strength of a radio wave.

Early radio used dots and dashes called Morse code. It was hard to send voices at first. An inventor named Reginald Fessenden helped fix this. He used a machine called an alternator. This made a steady signal. He could then add sound to that signal. In 1906, he sent speech 18 kilometers to a listening site.

AM radio became very popular in the 1920s.

This was the "Golden Age of Radio." People used it to hear news and music. Later, television became common in the 1950s. Today, many people use digital radio or podcasts instead.

AM signals can travel very long distances at night. This happens because they can bounce off the sky.

However, AM can have more noise than other radio. Because of this, many AM stations play talk shows or news. They do not play as much music as FM stations.
