AM broadcasting

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

AM broadcasting is a way to send sound through the air using radio waves. It uses a method called amplitude modulation, which is why we call it AM. This was the very first way people learned to broadcast audio signals. Today, it is still used all over the world. Most people hear AM on the medium wave band. It also works on the longwave and shortwave bands.

To understand how it works, we look at the radio wave itself. Early radio used spark-gap transmitters to send Morse code dots and dashes. These signals were bumpy and could not carry clear voices. An inventor named Reginald Fessenden found a better way. He used a machine called an alternator to create a steady, continuous wave. He then used a carbon microphone to change the strength of that wave. This process is called modulation. The wave carries the sound to the listener.

People have been working on these ideas for a long time. In 1901, Fessenden applied for a patent for his new method. By 1906, he gave a big demonstration in Brant Rock, Massachusetts. He sent speech 18 kilometers to a site in Plymouth, Massachusetts. This was a huge step for wireless technology. In the 1920s, new vacuum tube tools made broadcasting much easier. This helped radio move from experiments to something everyone could use.

Radio changed how people lived during a time called the "Golden Age of Radio." This lasted for about 30 years until the 1950s. During this time, AM radio was the main way to hear news and music. Families often sat together to listen to programs.

Later, television became popular and took many of the radio shows. Today, AM faces competition from FM, digital radio, and even podcasts. Many people now use music streaming services on the internet instead.

AM radio has some very special traits. It is more expensive to run because it needs high power. It also requires very large antennas because of the low frequencies. However, AM signals can travel very long distances at night. This happens because the signals can bounce off the ionosphere in the sky.

Because AM can have more interference or noise, it is not always best for music. Most AM stations today focus on spoken words like news, sports, or talk shows.
