His success started a new movement for workers. This movement was called the Stakhanovite movement. It was a way to encourage people to work harder. Workers who beat their goals were called "Stakhanovites." This was part of a plan to show the strength of their economic system. Stakhanov himself went on to study at the Industrial Academy in Moscow. From 1936 to 1941, he was a student there. He also became a leader in the mining industry. He served as a director for a mine in Karaganda.

Some people have questions about his famous records. In 1985, a story in The New York Times suggested a different side. It said the party might have helped him break the records. They wanted to boost the spirit of the people. Another paper said he had many helpers doing the support work. Even so, his way of organizing tasks helped mining become faster. His legacy lived on through many places. The city of Kadiivka was renamed Stakhanov for many years. He died in 1977 at the age of 71.
