He spent his life studying tiny living things called bacteria. Fleming is most famous for finding the first antibiotic. An antibiotic is a substance that can kill harmful bacteria. This discovery changed medicine forever. It helped doctors treat many dangerous infectious diseases. Because of this work, he won the Nobel Prize in 1945.

Fleming's most famous discovery happened by chance in 1928. He was studying bacteria on glass culture plates. Before going on a family holiday, he left some plates on a bench.

When he returned, he saw a strange thing. A mould had grown on one of the plates. This mould was from the genus Penicillium. He noticed the bacteria near the mould were destroyed. There was a clear ring where the bacteria could not grow. He called this substance penicillin.

Before penicillin, Fleming made another important discovery in 1922. He found a substance in his own nasal mucus. This substance could also dissolve certain bacteria. He named this substance lysozyme.

He tested many things to see if they had it. He used tears, blood, and even egg whites. He found that lysozyme is part of our natural immunity. This helps our bodies fight off small, harmless germs.

Fleming grew up on a farm in Scotland. He was born on 6 August 1881.

He studied at St Mary's Hospital Medical School in London. He earned his medical degree there in 1906. During World War I, he served as a captain. He worked in battlefield hospitals in France. There, he saw how infections hurt many soldiers. This experience made him want to find better ways to fight germs.

Today, we remember Fleming as a hero of science. He was even named one of the 100 most important people of the 20th century.

His work with penicillin is like finding a magic shield. Before his discovery, a simple infection could be very dangerous. Now, we have medicines that can stop many types of bacteria. His laboratory at St Mary's is now a museum. People can still visit the place where he made his great discoveries.
