Popov built a special tool. It used a part called a coherer. A coherer is a glass tube filled with metal bits. When radio waves hit the tube, the metal bits let electricity pass through. This turned on a relay, which was a switch. The switch made an electric bell ring.

Popov added a clever way to reset the tool. The bell arm would tap the tube to make it ready again. This helped him listen for lightning strikes from far away. Later, he used his work to send signals through the air. He sent messages between buildings in St. Petersburg. He even helped ships talk to the shore. His work helped people stay safe at sea. In Russia, May 7 is called Radio Day to honor his work.
