He was born in 1922 in a town called Usman. He studied how light and power work together. This field is called quantum electronics.

In the 1950s, Basov worked on a tool called a maser. A maser uses waves to make power. Later, he helped create the laser. A laser makes a very steady beam of light. He designed a three-level laser in 1955. In 1959, he suggested a way to make a semiconductor laser. This is a laser made from special parts.

Basov did much important work at the Lebedev Physical Institute. He even served as its director for many years. Because of his big ideas, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1964. He shared this prize with two other men. He also won many other awards for his science. Basov died in Moscow in 2001. His work still helps us use light in many ways today.
