Basov grew up in a town called Usman. He was born there on December 14, 1922. He finished his school years in Voronezh in 1941. During the Second World War, he served in the Red Army. He was part of the 1st Ukrainian Front. After the war, he went back to his studies. He graduated from the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute in 1950. He spent much of his career at the Lebedev Physical Institute.

He later suggested the construction of a semiconductor laser in 1959. He and his collaborators successfully built one in 1963. In 1966, he and his co-workers proposed the Disk laser. They later realized the thin disk active mirror semiconductor lasers through experiments. These steps helped define how we control light today.

Basov was also a leader in the study of nonlinear optics. He encouraged researchers at the Lebedev Physical Institute to explore this field. This work led to the discovery of optical phase conjugation. He worked with colleagues to realize a robust method for phase-locking laser arrays. They achieved this via optical phase conjugation in Stimulated Brillouin scattering. His ability to lead complex scientific teams helped push the boundaries of physics. He remained the head of the quantum radiophysics laboratory at the LPI until he died.

His early life was shaped by significant historical events. Basov was born in the town of Usman in 1922. He completed his schooling in Voronezh in 1941. During the Second World War, he served in the Red Army. He participated in the conflict with the 1st Ukrainian Front. After the war, he focused on his higher education. His influence reached into politics when he joined parliament in 1974.

His scientific contributions had massive real-world significance. Beyond laboratory tools, his work led to new missile defense initiatives. In 1985, he stated that the Soviet Union could match the Strategic Defense Initiative proposed by the U.S. He received many high honors for his service to science. These included the Lenin Prize in 1959 and the Nobel Prize in 1964. He was named a Hero of Socialist Labour twice, in 1969 and 1982. He also earned the Lomonosov Grand Gold Medal in 1990. Basov passed away in Moscow on July 1, 2001. He is buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery.
