Albert Spalding was one of the most important figures in early professional baseball. He was a star pitcher who played in the major leagues from 1871 to 1878. During his time with the Boston Red Stockings, he won 206 games. He was the very first pitcher to ever reach 200 wins. Spalding was also a trendsetter on the field. In 1877, he began wearing a glove to protect his hand. While others had used gloves before, they were not popular. By wearing one, he helped convince other players to do the same.

Spalding was much more than just an athlete. He helped turn baseball into a professional business. Along with William Hulbert, he organized the National League. They did this by bringing together top teams from the East and the West. In 1876, Spalding moved to the Chicago White Stockings. He helped bring many talented teammates to Chicago in secret. They did not want fans to know they were switching teams. This move helped the White Stockings win the first-ever National League pennant.

He also helped create new traditions for the sport. In 1886, Spalding and manager Cap Anson started spring training in Hot Springs, Arkansas. They believed the natural springs were good for the players. This idea became very popular, and many other teams followed them. Spalding also wanted to find the true history of the game. He led the Mills Commission to study how baseball began. In 1907, the commission claimed Abner Doubleday invented the game in 1839. Even though this was not true, it became a famous story.

Spalding was a very successful businessman as well. In 1876, he and his brother Walter opened a sporting goods store. The Spalding company grew very fast. By 1901, they had 14 different stores. They made and sold equipment for many kinds of sports. The company is still running today. Between 1888 and 1889, Spalding took players on a huge world tour. They traveled to places like Hawaii, Egypt, Italy, and England. He hoped this tour would make baseball a global sport.

He also helped turn the old Presidio of San Diego into a historic park. Spalding died of a stroke in 1915 at the age of 65. In 1939, he was honored by being put into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
