Many people call him the "father of baseball." He was a founding member of the New York Knickerbockers Base Ball Club in the 1840s. People often think he created the rules we use today. However, history shows his role might be a little different than people say. He was a pioneer who helped the game grow during a very exciting time.

How did the game work back then? Cartwright and a committee from his club helped create the Knickerbocker Rules in 1845. These rules added things like foul territories for the first time. They also made a rule that you could not retire a runner by hitting them with a thrown ball. For a long time, people thought Cartwright also created flat bases and nine players in the outfield.

Now, we know that a group called the 1857 Convention actually set those specific rules. These rules included nine innings and 90-foot basepaths.

Cartwright's life began in 1820 in New York. His father, Alexander Cartwright Sr., was a merchant sea captain.

As a young man, Alexander Jr. worked as a clerk in Manhattan. He also spent his free time as a volunteer firefighter. He served with the Oceana Hose Company No. 36 and the Knickerbocker Engine Company No. 12. After a fire destroyed his bank in 1845, he became a bookseller with his brother, Alfred.

Many facts about Cartwright have been studied by historians. Some people once believed Abner Doubleday invented baseball, but that was proven wrong in 1939.

Even though there is debate about his rules, Cartwright was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1938. This was 46 years after he died. Some people thought the U.S. Congress named him the inventor in 1953. But the official records from that day do not actually mention him.

Cartwright's journey eventually took him far away from New York. In 1849, he went to California during the gold rush. Later, he moved to the Kingdom of Hawaii to live and work.

He served as the fire chief of Honolulu from 1850 until 1863. He even advised King David Kalākaua and Queen Emma. He died on July 12, 1892, and was buried in the Oahu Cemetery. Today, his name is still honored in Hawaii through the Cartwright Cup.
