Alan Lomax was a man who loved music. He wanted to save old songs for the future. He was an ethnomusicologist, which is a person who studies music in different cultures.

Alan traveled to many places. He went to the United States, Britain, Italy, and Spain. He even went to the Caribbean. He used tools to catch the sounds of people singing. He used discs made of metal and plastic to record them.

He did not work alone. He worked with his father, John Lomax. He also worked with his wife, Elizabeth. She helped him record music in many lands. They wanted to show that all music is important.

Alan found many famous singers. He helped the world hear artists like Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly. He also recorded Muddy Waters. Hearing Alan's recordings helped Muddy Waters become a full-time musician.

Alan's work was a huge gift. He spent seventy years collecting songs. Most of his work is now at the Library of Congress. This is a place where important things are kept safe. We can still listen to his songs today.
