Before he was a star, Jimmie worked on railroads. He was a brakeman, which is a person who helps stop trains. While working, he heard work songs. These songs helped him find his own musical style.

In 1927, Jimmie recorded his first solo songs. One song was "Blue Yodel No. 1 (T for Texas)." This song made him very famous. He went on to record more than 120 songs.

Jimmie had a sickness called tuberculosis. This illness made it hard for him to work on the railroad. He moved to focus on his music career instead. Sadly, he died from the sickness in 1933. He was only 35 years old. Even so, many artists still look to him for ideas today. He has been put into many halls of fame.
