Before he became a star, Jimmie worked on the railroad. He started as a waterboy for the crew. Later, he worked as a baggage handler and a brakeman. A brakeman is a person who helps stop the trains. While working, he listened to the gandy dancers. These were workers who sang blues songs while they worked.
