Carl learned to play music in a unique way. His family was poor and worked in cotton fields. His father once made him a guitar from a cigar box and a broomstick. Later, he used a worn-out guitar. He could not always afford new strings. When strings broke, he had to retie them with knots. These knots cut his fingers while he played. This helped him discover a new way to bend notes. He also learned from a field worker named John Westbrook. Westbrook told him to feel the music in his soul.

Carl began his professional career in the late 1940s. He and his brother Jay played in local taverns. They played songs like "Blue Moon of Kentucky." Carl eventually formed a band with his brother Clayton. Clayton played the upright bass to complete their sound. Carl also worked many day jobs. He picked cotton and worked in factories. He even worked at a baking company. He played music six nights a week to support his family.

In 1954, Carl went to Memphis to find Sam Phillips. Phillips ran a famous place called Sun Records. Carl auditioned and was signed to the label. In 1955, he wrote the song "Blue Suede Shoes." He got the idea after seeing a dancer. The dancer was angry that his date scuffed his shoes. The song became a massive hit in 1956. It was the first record from Sun Records to sell one million copies. It reached number one on the country music charts.
