He was very popular in the 1830s. Rice was known for performing in blackface. This means he used makeup to change his skin color. He used African American songs and dances in his shows. He became very famous for his character named Jim Crow. This character was based on a folk story. Rice also sang a song called "Jump Jim Crow." Later, this name was used for unfair laws in the South.

Rice had many different acts. In one show, he used a large sack. He would sing a song while a child crawled out of the sack. The child would copy all of Rice's dance moves. He also made a wooden statue of his character. Some say he carved the statue himself. He used it to tell people about his shows. Rice traveled to many places. He even performed in London, England. He was a very successful star of his time.
