Akrotiri and Dhekelia are two special areas on the island of Cyprus.

They are known as the Sovereign Base Areas, or SBAs. These lands belong to the United Kingdom rather than the Republic of Cyprus. They are used mostly for military bases and special stations. One area is the Western Sovereign Base Area, which includes RAF Akrotiri.

The other is the Eastern Sovereign Base Area, which contains the Ayios Nikolaos Station. These areas are very important for watching signals and communications in the Mediterranean.

The way these areas work is very unique. They are not meant to be colonies or places for big businesses. The British government promised not to build new towns or large industrial sites there. Instead, the areas are meant to support military needs only. They are closely tied to the local Cypriot communities and economies.

For example, the areas share services like healthcare and policing with Cyprus. This coordination helps keep daily life running smoothly for everyone living nearby. Even though they are separate, they work together with the Republic of Cyprus.

These areas were created a long time ago in 1960. This happened when Cyprus gained independence from the British Empire. A treaty was signed by the United Kingdom, Greece, and Turkey. The leaders of Cyprus also signed this important agreement.

The British wanted to keep these spots because of their location. Being near the Suez Canal and the Middle East is very helpful. This allows the British military to use the bases for training and aircraft. This history has kept the military presence on the island for many years.

History shows that these bases have seen many important events. In 1974, there was a military conflict in Cyprus. Many people had to flee their homes during this time. The British bases provided help to these refugees.

Some people even built new villages like Achna Forest near the Dhekelia area. More recently, in March 2026, the Akrotiri base was hit by a drone strike. This happened during a conflict known as the 2026 Iran War. Thankfully, no one was hurt and only minor damage occurred to the runway.

Today, the SBAs remain a key part of the region. They help with intelligence work through systems like the UKUSA network. This involves listening to electronic signals to stay informed.

The land also has beautiful nature to discover. The Akrotiri Salt Lake is a protected wetland that is very special. People living in the area must follow specific laws that match Cyprus. This mix of military use and local life makes the SBAs a very interesting place to study.
