There are two special areas on an island.
Akrotiri and Dhekelia are two areas on the island of Cyprus.
In 1960, Cyprus became an independent nation. A treaty was signed to make this happen. The British kept these two areas for their military. The location is very important for the UK. It is near the Mediterranean Sea and the Middle East.
There were hard times in the past. In 1974, there was a conflict in Cyprus. Many people had to leave their homes. The British bases helped by giving aid to refugees. Some people even built new villages near the bases.
Today, the bases work closely with Cyprus. They share things like schools and doctors.
Akrotiri and Dhekelia are two special areas on the island of Cyprus.
The way these areas work is very unique. They are not meant to be colonies or places for big businesses. The British government promised not to build new towns or large industrial sites there. Instead, the areas are meant to support military needs only. They are closely tied to the local Cypriot communities and economies.
These areas were created a long time ago in 1960. This happened when Cyprus gained independence from the British Empire. A treaty was signed by the United Kingdom, Greece, and Turkey. The leaders of Cyprus also signed this important agreement. The British wanted to keep these spots because of their location. Being near the Suez Canal and the Middle East is very helpful. This allows the British military to use the bases for training and aircraft. This history has kept the military presence on the island for many years.
History shows that these bases have seen many important events. In 1974, there was a military conflict in Cyprus. Many people had to flee their homes during this time. The British bases provided help to these refugees.
Today, the SBAs remain a key part of the region. They help with intelligence work through systems like the UKUSA network. This involves listening to electronic signals to stay informed.
The Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, often called the SBAs, are two unique British Overseas Territories.
The mechanism of SBA governance is very specific and follows a 1960 treaty. This treaty was signed by the United Kingdom, Greece, Turkey, and the leaders of Cyprus. Under this agreement, the British government promised not to develop the areas for anything other than military use. They also agreed not to establish civilian commercial or industrial enterprises. The goal was to prevent the SBAs from disrupting the economic unity of the island of Cyprus.
The SBAs serve several distinct military and technical purposes. One major role is signals intelligence, which involves monitoring electronic communications. The Ayios Nikolaos Station is a key part of the UKUSA Agreement intelligence network, sometimes called ECHELON.
The history of these areas is tied to the independence of Cyprus in 1960. Before this, Cyprus was part of the British Empire. When the island gained independence, the London and Zürich Agreements allowed the UK to retain these specific territories. The British wanted to keep these locations because of their strategic geopolitical value. Being near the Suez Canal and the Middle East makes the island an ideal staging post for military aircraft. This strategic importance has helped maintain a British military presence on the island for over sixty years.
History also shows how the SBAs have responded to regional conflicts. In 1974, following a military coup and a Turkish invasion, many people were displaced. The SBAs provided humanitarian aid to refugees during this period.
Today, the administration of the SBAs is handled by a British Administrator. This person is also the Commander of British Forces Cyprus and is appointed by the British monarch. The Administrator holds executive and legislative authority similar to a governor. A Chief Officer manages the day-to-day civil government, supported by Area Officers. There are no elections held within the territory. However, the legal system is closely aligned with the laws of the Republic of Cyprus. This helps maintain order through the SBA Police and the Cyprus Joint Police Unit.
The SBAs are also home to important environmental and cultural features. The Akrotiri Salt Lake is a protected wetland that is a notable part of the Western Sovereign Base Area.
