Rauf Raif Denktaş was a prominent Turkish Cypriot politician, barrister, and jurist. He played a defining role in the political structure of Cyprus during the 20th century. Denktaş is best known as the founding president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). He held various leadership roles as the island's political landscape shifted over several decades. His career spanned from legal practice to high-level international diplomacy. He remained a central figure in Cypriot affairs for much of his life.

Denktaş began his professional life with a diverse range of roles. After graduating from The English School in Nicosia, he worked as a translator in Famagusta. He later served as a court clerk and a teacher for one year. To further his education, he traveled to Istanbul and London. In London, he trained as a barrister at Lincoln's Inn, a famous legal institution. He graduated in 1947 and returned to Cyprus to practice law. The political history of Cyprus was marked by intense struggle during his lifetime. In 1957, Denktaş helped found the Turkish Resistance Organization, known as the TMT. This group formed to resist the EOKA movement, which sought Enosis, or union with Greece. Denktaş worked toward the partition of the island during this period. In 1958, he represented Turkish Cypriots at the United Nations General Assembly. He also advised the Turkish government during the creation of the London and Zurich Agreements in 1959. These agreements helped lead to Cyprus gaining independence from Britain in 1960.

Following independence, the relationship between the two main communities on the island became strained. In 1963, President Makarios proposed constitutional amendments that would change the rights of Turkish Cypriots. This led to paramilitary actions in December 1963, causing Turkish Cypriots to withdraw from the government. In 1974, a Greek ultra-nationalist military coup occurred on the island. In response, Turkey launched a military operation to ensure the safety of Turkish Cypriots. By August 14, 1974, the Turkish Army controlled 37% of the island's territory. This event fundamentally changed the geography and governance of Cyprus.

Denktaş held several distinct presidential titles during different stages of the island's development. From 1974 to 1975, he led the Autonomous Turkish Cypriot Administration. He then served as the president of the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus from 1975 to 1983. In 1983, he declared the independence of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. He was subsequently elected president of the TRNC in 1985, 1990, 1995, and 2000. It is important to note that the TRNC is not recognized by any state except Turkey. Throughout these years, he also acted as a chief negotiator in United Nations peace talks.

In the early 2000s, efforts to reunite the island increased due to interest in joining the European Union. In 2004, the United Nations proposed a settlement known as the Annan Plan. Denktaş opposed this specific version of the proposal. During a referendum on April 24, 2004, the plan was accepted by 65% of the Turkish community. However, a vast majority of the Greek community rejected it. Following these events, Denktaş announced he would not seek a fifth term. He was succeeded by Mehmet Ali Talat in April 2005.

Beyond his political life, Denktaş was a prolific writer and an accomplished photographer. He authored approximately fifty books in both English and Turkish. His writings covered many subjects, including criminal cases, political history, and personal memoirs. His photography was exhibited in many countries, including the United States, Italy, and France. He was also a recipient of many honorary doctorates from universities in Turkey and the United States. He passed away on January 13, 2012, following a period of declining health. His funeral in Nicosia was attended by thousands of people.
