He made the first safe lithium-ion battery. This kind of battery is used in cell phones. It is also used in notebook computers. Before his work, batteries were not as small or safe.

Yoshino started his work at Asahi Kasei Corporation. In 1983, he made a prototype battery. He used lithium cobalt oxide for the cathode. The cathode is one side of the battery. He used polyacetylene for the anode. The anode is the other side. Lithium ions move between these two parts during charging.

Polyacetylene had some problems. It was not stable. It also made the battery too big. In 1985, Yoshino switched to a carbon material for the anode. This made the battery better. This was the birth of the modern lithium-ion battery.

His work was very important. He won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2019.
