Shuji Nakamura is an engineer. He helped invent the blue LED. An LED is a tiny part that makes light. Before his work, blue LEDs were very hard to make.

Nakamura worked at a company called Nichia. He used a material called gallium nitride. This is often called GaN. Other scientists tried to use GaN before him. But they could not make it work well. Nakamura found a new way. He used heat to fix the material. This is called thermal annealing. This way was good for making many lights at once.

His blue light was very bright. It was 1,000 times brighter than older blue lights. This blue light can turn into white light. This helps make the lights in our homes. He also helped make blue lasers for Blu-ray discs.

In 2014, Nakamura won the Nobel Prize in Physics. This is a very famous prize for science. He is now a professor at a school in California. He still studies how to make new light technology.
