He was born in 1925. He studied physics at the University of Tokyo. Later, he worked at Sony. He also worked at IBM in the United States.

Leo studied how electricity moves through tiny parts. He found a special way called tunneling. This happens when electricity moves through a very thin barrier. This discovery led him to make the tunnel diode. This was a new kind of electronic tool. Because of this work, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1973.

Leo also thought about superlattices. These are man-made crystals with special patterns. These patterns help make new materials. He used a method called molecular-beam epitaxy to grow these crystals. This method works in a space with no air.

Leo had five rules for being creative. He said do not let the past trap you. Do not follow one leader too closely. Do not hold on to things you do not need. Do not avoid hard talks. Most of all, do not lose your childhood curiosity.
