John Schrieffer was a famous physicist. A physicist is a scientist who studies how the world works. He was born in Illinois in 1931. As a boy in Florida, he played with rockets. This sparked his interest in how electricity works.

John studied at many big schools. Later, he worked with two other men named Bardeen and Cooper. They wanted to understand superconductivity. This is a way that some materials let electricity flow without any loss.

In 1957, John had a big idea on a subway. He knew that tiny bits called electrons move in pairs. These are called Cooper pairs. John used math to show how all these pairs work together at once. This new idea was called the BCS theory. It helped solve a problem that had confused many scientists for years.

For this work, John won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1972. He also taught at many universities. He worked at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He also worked at Florida State University. He spent his time looking for new ways to use superconductivity. John died in 2019 at the age of 88.
