A physicist studies how matter and energy move. A neuroscientist studies the brain.

Cooper did important work on superconductivity. This is when electricity flows easily through metal. He worked with John Bardeen and John Robert Schrieffer. They made the BCS theory. This theory explains how superconductivity happens. Cooper found that two electrons can join together. These are called Cooper pairs.

This discovery won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1972.

Later, Cooper studied the brain. He wanted to know how people learn. He helped create the BCM theory. This theory explains synaptic plasticity. This is the way connections in the brain change. It shows how the brain helps us see. Cooper taught at Brown University for many years. He also started a company to study brain networks. He died in 2024 at the age of 94.
