In 1947, Bardeen and his team at Bell Labs made a new part. This part is called a transistor. Before this, machines used large glass vacuum tubes. The transistor was much smaller. It used less power and was very reliable. This invention helped make modern things like phones and computers.

Later, Bardeen studied superconductivity. This is a way that some materials carry power without losing any. He helped create the BCS theory to explain how this happens. This theory is named for Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer.
