Nevill Mott was a famous British scientist. He was a theoretical physicist. This means he used math to understand how the world works.

Mott studied how tiny parts inside materials behave. He looked at metals and glass. He wanted to know why some materials let electricity flow. Other materials act as insulators, which means they stop electricity.

He made big discoveries about these materials. He studied how light affects film used in cameras. He also worked on radar during World War II. He helped make radar work better by using a large metal wire mat.

In 1977, Mott won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He shared this prize with two other men. They studied how tiny parts move in magnetic and messy systems. Because of his work, some things are called "Mott insulators." This is a name used for materials that stop electricity. He was a very important leader in science for many years.
