Ageism is a word used to describe unfair treatment based on a person's age.

It often refers to how older people are treated in society. However, ageism can also affect younger people. This might happen when adults do not value the ideas of children. It can also involve denying young people certain rights, like the right to vote. Ageism is a complex issue that affects how we see everyone.

This type of bias often works through stereotypes. A stereotype is a fixed idea about a group of people. For example, some people might think older workers cannot learn new technology. Others might think young people lack the wisdom to make good choices. These ideas can lead to people being treated poorly in jobs or schools. Sometimes, these judgments happen without a person even realizing it. This is called implicit ageism. It can be very hard to change these deep-seated habits.

Robert Neil Butler was a man who helped define this concept. He was the founding director of the National Institute on Aging. In 1969, he coined the term "ageism." He wanted to show how age-based bias is similar to racism or sexism. Butler said ageism has three parts. It includes negative attitudes toward aging. It also includes unfair practices against older people. Finally, it includes rules or policies that keep these stereotypes alive.

There are many different ways ageism shows up in our world. In the workplace, managers might wrongly assume older staff are slow to learn. In the digital world, people may assume older adults struggle with computers. This is called digital ageism, but it is often not true. Some people even face "benevolent prejudice." This is when people think older or younger people are friendly but not capable. A survey by Age Concern found that many people see those over 70 as friendly. Yet, fewer people saw them as capable.

Ageism can even affect a person's own health and well-being. If people believe bad things about getting older, they may feel bad about themselves. This can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. For example, an older person might call a mistake a "senior moment." This reinforces the idea that aging means losing memory. On the other hand, people who stay independent often stay healthier. They defy the unfair ideas that society holds. Understanding ageism helps us treat every person as a unique individual.
