A man named Robert Butler created this word in 1969. He said ageism can hurt older people. It can also hurt young people.

Some people use stereotypes to judge others. A stereotype is a fixed idea about a group. For example, some may think older workers cannot learn new tools. This is not always true. Some may think children are too young to have good ideas. This can lead to people ignoring what kids say.

Ageism can also happen in the digital world. People might think older adults cannot use computers well. This is often not the case.

Sometimes, ageism is hidden. It can be in the way we talk. People might use mean phrases about getting old. This can make people feel bad about themselves. When people believe these bad ideas, it can even affect their health. It is best to see people as individuals. We should respect everyone, no matter their age.
