Transphobia is a term used to describe negative feelings or actions toward transgender people. It is a type of prejudice or discrimination. This is similar to racism, sexism, or ableism. It can involve fear, anger, or even violence. Some people may act this way because they do not agree with social gender roles. People who hold these views are called transphobes.

This type of treatment can happen in many different ways. Transgender youth often face bullying or harassment at school. They may also face hard times in foster care or welfare programs. Adults can face problems in their daily lives too. They might deal with being teased in public or being treated unfairly at work. Some people even face trouble when trying to get healthcare. These experiences can make many trans people feel unsafe in public.

Researchers have studied why transphobia happens. A 2022 study by Hailey A. Hatch found that many people with transphobic views also hold views against gay or bisexual people. Other factors include a person's beliefs about gender roles. A 2019 study by Rad and colleagues looked at how people identify gender. They found that beliefs about what gender is can affect how people feel. These beliefs are often linked to how people feel about rules for bathrooms.

There are different ideas about where these feelings come from. Some thinkers believe it is linked to sexism. This is the idea that male and female are rigid categories. Others believe it is linked to history and colonialism. Some suggest it is an extension of homophobia. In the United Kingdom, some people say there is a moral panic about these issues. This can lead to new groups working against transgender rights.

Since the 1990s, things have been changing in many parts of the Western world. Many places have made new policies to help people have equal chances. The United Nations even started a campaign called "Stop the Stigma." This campaign helps spread acceptance for different identities. However, some new laws have been made in many countries since 2021. This has led to an increase in both new laws and violence.
