Transphobia refers to negative attitudes, feelings, or actions directed toward transgender or transsexual people. It also describes prejudice against transness in general. This includes emotions like fear, aversion, hatred, or anger. These feelings often target people who do not conform to social gender roles. Transphobia is a form of prejudice and discrimination. It is similar to racism, sexism, or ableism. It is also closely linked to homophobia, which is prejudice against gay or lesbian people.

Transphobia manifests in many different ways throughout a person's life. For transgender youth, it often appears as bullying or school violence. They may also experience abuse from family members or sexual harassment. These young people are also more likely to be placed in foster care or welfare programs. As adults, transgender people encounter various forms of harassment. This includes public ridicule, misgendering, or police violence. Many adults also face healthcare or workplace discrimination. These combined issues can make many transgender people feel unsafe in public spaces.

There are several specific terms used to describe related concepts. Cissexism is the belief that gender is determined solely by biological sex. This view assumes that one's gender must be male or female. This can lead to the oppression of non-binary or transgender identities. Cisgender privilege refers to the unearned rights held by nontransgender people. This includes easier access to gender-specific healthcare or gender-segregated teams. Another term is transprejudice. This refers to the negative stereotyping of people whose identity does not match social expectations. Harassment directed at a person's gender identity is sometimes called trans bashing.

Researchers have investigated the underlying causes of transphobic attitudes. A 2022 meta-analysis by Hailey A. Hatch found several contributing factors. The strongest predictor was a person's existing attitudes toward lesbian, gay, or bisexual people. Other significant factors included individual aggressiveness and gender role beliefs. A 2019 study by Rad and colleagues surveyed 1,323 American adults. They found that gender category beliefs were strongly linked to feelings of warmth toward transgender people. These beliefs also predicted preferences regarding bathroom policies. The study suggested these attitudes might be rooted in hierarchical social classification systems.

Several theories attempt to explain the origins of transphobia. Transfeminist theorist Julia Serano argues it stems from "oppositional sexism." This is the belief that male and female are rigid, mutually exclusive categories. Other authors link the origins of transphobia to colonialism. They point to the "gendercide" of third-gender people during the European colonization of the Americas. Some thinkers, like Jody Norton, see it as an extension of homophobia and misogyny. They argue that transgender people are feared for challenging the traditional gender binary. In the United Kingdom, sociologists have noted an "anti-trans moral panic" linked to authoritarian beliefs.

Transphobia has significant impacts on mental and physical health. The stress caused by discrimination leads to negative mental health outcomes. This includes higher rates of drug use disorders and suicide. It can also lead to minors running away from home. Transgender individuals face an increased risk of physical and sexual violence. A U.S. survey of 402 older, high-income transgender people found that 60% reported violence or harassment. This violence can come from many sources. It can originate from strangers, co-workers, or even people within the LGBT community.

Global trends regarding transphobia have shifted over recent decades. Since the 1990s, much of the Western world has established policies to combat discrimination. These policies aim to support equal opportunity in many areas of life. The United Nations has also helped through campaigns like "Stop the Stigma." This initiative works to improve social acceptance of nontraditional gender identities. However, recent years have seen new challenges. Transphobic violence has been on the rise since 2021. This has occurred alongside an increase in anti-trans discriminatory laws in many countries.
