The transgender rights movement is a social and political effort. Its primary goal is to improve the legal status of transgender people. Activists work to stop discrimination and violence against this community. They focus on many areas of life, such as housing and employment. They also advocate for fairness in education, public accommodations, and health care. This movement is a specific part of the broader LGBTQ rights movements.

One major goal is a process called gender self-identification. This allows people to change their identification documents to match their gender identity. Currently, some places require gender-affirming surgery or medical requirements for these changes. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) argues against these strict rules. They state that lack of recognition hinders access to essential services. It can also prevent people from using bathrooms or finding jobs. Most importantly, mismatched documents can put transgender people at risk of violence.

Legal victories have occurred in different parts of the world. The European Court of Justice ruled that states should recognize gender without excessive requirements. In Japan, the Supreme Court ruled that forced sterilization cannot be required. Human rights experts argue these are part of universal human rights. The Yogyakarta Principles link transgender rights to freedom of expression. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights supports the right to be free from discrimination. Groups like Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights have argued for the right to life.

The history of this movement includes many early pioneers. In the 1910s and 1920s, Magnus Hirschfeld worked in Germany. He helped people obtain passes to cross-dress legally. He also helped them change their legal names. In Argentina, a group called Maricas Unidas Argentinas (MUA) formed. This was a mutual aid network in Buenos Aires. It emerged around 1948 or 1957 to support people in prison. MUA is considered one of the first documented cases of trans activism.

In the United States, activism grew through many specific events. In 1952, Virginia Prince launched the journal Transvestia. This publication is often seen as an early start for the movement. In 1959, the Cooper Do-nuts Riot happened in Los Angeles. This occurred when people fought back against police harassment. In 1966, the Compton's Cafeteria riot took place in San Francisco. This was one of the first recorded LGBT-related riots in U.S. history. During the 1969 Stonewall riots, people like Marsha P. Johnson were in the vanguard. Johnson later co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) with Sylvia Rivera.

In the 1990s, the movement gained new terminology and focus. Leslie Feinberg published a pamphlet in 1992 called "Transgender Liberation." This work helped the term "transgender" enter common usage. Feinberg argued that the gender binary is a construct of Western civilization. In 1993, Adela Vázquez protested government actions in San Francisco. She fought against labeling the transgender community as disabled to remove them from the workforce. In 1999, Gwendolyn Ann Smith founded Transgender Day of Remembrance. This annual day honors those murdered in transphobic hate crimes.

Progress on legal protections has been uneven across the United States. By 2014, only 17 states had laws protecting transgender individuals. This represented about 45% of all U.S. states. These states included California, Colorado, Illinois, and Massachusetts, among others. Organizations like the Transgender Law Center work to increase these numbers. Activists also continue to fight for better conditions in prisons. The story of CeCe McDonald highlights the need for legal defense and awareness. Today, the movement continues to seek dignity and equality for all.
