This song helps people feel a sense of pride. It is played at big events like sports ceremonies. People also hear it during community celebrations. The anthem helps identify Australia to the rest of the world. It is a symbol of the nation's character and traditions.

The song was created by a man named Peter Dodds McCormick. He was a composer born in Scotland. In 1878, he attended a concert in Sydney. He felt sad that no Australian anthem was played. While riding home on a bus, he had a sudden idea. He wrote the first verse and the music very quickly.

He even used a special way of writing music called Tonic Sol-fa. The Australian government later gave him £100 for his work.

Choosing an anthem was a long and busy process. For a long time, Australia used "God Save the Queen." In 1972, a poll showed many people wanted a new song. The Whitlam government tried to find a new anthem through a contest. They received 2,500 entries for lyrics and 1,300 for music. However, the choices were not popular with many artists.

Eventually, a vote was held to pick a favorite song.

History shows that the song has changed many times. In 1977, a big vote called a plebiscite took place. "Advance Australia Fair" won against three other songs. These included "Waltzing Matilda" and "The Song of Australia." In 1984, the Hawke government made it the official anthem.

The lyrics were changed to be more inclusive. For example, the first line now says "Australians all" instead of "Australia's sons." This makes the song feel fair to everyone.

Today, we hear many different versions of the song. One very common version was arranged in 1986. A composer named Thomas Tycho made this orchestral version. It is the music often played during big sporting victories. In 2021, the lyrics changed once more. The word "young" was replaced with "one" in the second line. This change was made to recognize Indigenous Australians.
