Activated carbon is a special form of carbon used to clean many things.

It is often called activated charcoal. This material is very good at removing unwanted bits from water and air. It works through a process called adsorption. In adsorption, tiny molecules stick to a surface instead of soaking into it. This is different from absorption, where things soak inside like water in a sponge.

Because it has so many tiny holes, it is a very powerful tool for cleaning.

To make this carbon, people use a process called activation. This creates millions of tiny, low-volume pores. You can think of these pores like a microscopic sponge structure. Making activated carbon is like making popcorn from dried corn kernels. Popcorn is light and fluffy with a high surface area. This means there is a lot of space for things to stick.

This tiny structure gives it a huge surface area to work with.

Scientists find many ways to make this material from waste. They use coconut husks, rice husks, and nutshells. They also use olive stones and waste from paper mills. Using these items is called upcycling. It helps the planet by reducing landfill waste. It also lowers the carbon footprint of making new things.

This turns old trash into something very useful for the world.

There are many amazing facts about how much space this carbon has. A single gram of it can treat 10 milliliters of water per day. Researchers at Cornell University even made a version with a massive surface area. This version had a BET area of 7,000 square meters per gram. That is a huge amount of space for such a small piece!

Regular charcoal has a much smaller surface area of about 10 square meters per gram.

Activated carbon is used in many parts of our daily lives. It is used in medicine to treat some types of poisoning. The World Health Organization even puts it on a list of essential medicines.

It is used in water filters to make drinking water safe. It can even be used to clean the taste of vodka. In industry, it helps clean air in respirators and filters. It even helps remove caffeine from certain drinks.
