It is often called activated charcoal. This material is used to clean water and air.

People make it by adding tiny holes to charcoal. These holes are called pores. You can think of these pores like a microscopic sponge. Because of these holes, the carbon has a lot of surface area. This means there is much more space for things to stick to. This sticking process is called adsorption.

In adsorption, tiny bits of matter stick to a surface.

Scientists make activated carbon from many waste products. They use coconut husks and rice husks. They also use olive stones and nutshells. Using waste helps the planet by reducing landfill use.

Activated carbon has many jobs. It cleans drinking water and treats sewage. It can even help make vodka taste better. In medicine, doctors use it to treat people who swallow poison.
