Water purification is the way we clean water.

We do this to remove bad things. These bad things can be tiny germs or bits of dirt. We also remove gases and chemicals. This makes the water safe to drink. It also makes it ready for doctors or factories to use.

Many plants start by using a screen. This catches large things like sticks or leaves.

Some water comes from deep underground. This water is often very clear. Soil and rock act like a natural filter for it. Other water comes from rivers or lakes. This water might have more germs or algae in it.

To clean it, plants use many steps. They might add chemicals to help dirt clump together. These clumps are called floc.

Once the floc forms, it sinks to the bottom of a big tank. This step is called sedimentation. Next, the water moves through filters. These filters use sand or gravel to catch tiny bits. Some plants even use ultraviolet light to kill germs.
