Puddle

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A puddle is a small pool of liquid on a surface. Most puddles are made of water. They form in low spots on the ground. They can also form on flat surfaces. This happens because of surface tension. Surface tension is a force that holds the liquid together.

Puddles are often murky. This means the water looks cloudy. This happens when rain stirs up dirt and mud.

Some insects, like male butterflies, visit wet mud. They look for salts and nutrients there. This is called puddling. For very small life, a puddle can be a whole home. Tadpoles and mosquito larvae live in them.

Puddles can also cause problems. On roads, they can splash cars and people. In cold weather, puddles can turn into ice. This makes the ground slippery and dangerous.
