Many cruise lines now travel between Panama and San Francisco. The city is the largest in its state. It is also known as Mexico's biggest beach resort.

The city is divided into three distinct areas. The north end is the traditional area. This part includes Parque Papagayo and the Zócalo. It also reaches the beaches of Caleta and Caletilla. The middle part of the bay is called the Zona Dorada. This means "golden zone" in Spanish. The south end is called Diamante, which means "diamond."

Acapulco has a very long history. Long ago, the Olmecs and Aztecs lived in this region. The name comes from the Nahuatl language. It means "where the reeds were destroyed" or "at the big reeds."

This idea is even on the city's seal. In the 1500s, it became a vital Spanish port. Large ships called galleons sailed from the Philippines to Acapulco. This trade linked Asia, Europe, and Mexico. In 1614, a group of Japanese samurai even visited the port.

In the mid-1900s, Acapulco became very famous. It was a favorite place for Hollywood stars and millionaires. People like Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra visited the city.

The city grew from 5,000 people to 50,000 by the 1960s. In 1997, a large storm called Hurricane Pauline hit the area. The storm caused much damage and many people lost their lives. The city had to work hard to recover from the disaster.

Today, Acapulco is an important place for many reasons. It is a major port for exporting cars to the Pacific. Many people from within Mexico still visit the beautiful beaches. However, the city has faced hard times recently. A rise in gang violence has changed how many foreign tourists visit. The US government has even warned its citizens about traveling there. Despite these challenges, the city remains a huge part of Mexico's geography.
