As a young man, Öcalan studied many different subjects. He first went to a vocational high school in Ankara in 1966. Later, he studied political science at Ankara University. During his school years, he began to join political meetings. He was interested in both Kurdish and left-wing ideas. In 1972, he was arrested after taking part in a rally. He spent seven months in Mamak Prison during this time. He did not graduate from his university studies.

In 1978, Öcalan helped found a group called the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or the PKK. He wanted to find a way for Kurdish people to have more rights. In 1979, he moved to Syria to lead his group. From Syria, he helped set up training camps in Lebanon. In 1984, the PKK began an armed conflict with the Turkish government. The group wanted to create an independent state for Kurds. Öcalan also spent time talking to other Kurdish leaders in Iraq.

Life changed greatly for Öcalan in February 1999. He was taken from Nairobi, Kenya, by Turkish intelligence officers. He was brought to Turkey and put in a prison on İmralı island. At first, he was sentenced to death by a court. Later, Turkey stopped using the death penalty for people. This changed his sentence to life in prison. He has lived on that island in the Sea of Marmara for many years. He has sometimes been allowed visits and sometimes kept in isolation.

Even from prison, Öcalan has shared many important ideas. He has written several books about his views on life. He teaches a philosophy called democratic confederalism. He also speaks about the science of women, which he calls Jineology. He has tried to help find peace between the PKK and Turkey many times. In 2013, he helped start a peace process. In February 2025, he asked his group to stop fighting and disband.
