She was a professor who taught economics. Economics is the study of how money and trade work. She studied very hard in the United States. She earned degrees from the University of New Hampshire and the University of Connecticut. Later, she taught at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. She also served as the president of Istanbul Bank. This background in money helped her later in her career.

Çiller entered politics in the early 1990s. In 1991, she became a minister for the economy. She worked under a leader named Süleyman Demirel. When Demirel became President in 1993, a spot opened for a new leader. Çiller became the leader of the True Path Party. She also became the Prime Minister of Turkey. She was the first woman to ever hold this job in her country. This was a very big moment for Turkish politics.

Her time as leader was filled with many hard jobs. There was a lot of fighting between the Turkish military and a group called the PKK. Çiller worked to make the army much stronger. She helped the military get better tools and equipment. She also worked to get the United States and the European Union to call the PKK a terrorist group. However, this time was also very sad for many people. Many Kurdish people were treated very unfairly. Reports said that the military and other groups burned villages and harmed civilians.

Money problems also happened during her leadership. In 1994, many people lost trust in the economy. This caused the Turkish lira to almost fail. Her government signed a big trade deal called the Customs Union with the EU in 1995. But she also faced many accusations of being dishonest. Some people said she used government money for herself. Others said she was too close to organized crime groups like the mafia. These stories made many people stop supporting her.

Eventually, her time in power came to an end. Her government fell after the military stepped in. This was the fourth time such a thing happened in Turkey's history. In the 1999 and 2002 elections, her party lost many votes. By 2002, her party did not win any seats in parliament. This meant she had to leave her job as party leader. She then left active politics. Her life shows how much a leader can change a nation.
