She was the first woman to be prime minister in her country. She was also only the second woman to hold that role in the Muslim world. Zia led a large political party called the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, or the BNP. She was the leader of this party for many years. People often called her an "uncompromising leader" because she stood firm in her beliefs. Her life was full of big changes for her country.

Zia's life began in 1946 in a place called Jalpaiguri.

Her family moved to East Bengal, which is now Bangladesh, in 1950. In 1960, she married a man named Ziaur Rahman. He was an officer in the army. During the Liberation War in 1971, things were very difficult. Pakistani soldiers held Zia and her two sons in a room. She was finally released in December 1971 when the war ended. After her husband became president, she served as the first lady of the nation.

After her husband died in 1981, Zia entered politics.

She became the leader of the BNP in 1984. At that time, a military leader named Hussain Muhammad Ershad was in power. Zia worked hard to bring democracy back to the people. She led many large public rallies and protests. She even refused to join elections in 1986 and 1988 to show she did not agree with the government. This helped her lead a mass uprising in 1990 to change the government.

Her first term started in 1991 after a big election. During this time, she helped make new rules for schools and the economy. Her second term began in 2001 and lasted until 2006. During these years, more girls went to school and the economy grew. However, this time also saw some political trouble and a military takeover in 2007. This led to many hard years for Zia and her family.

In later years, Zia faced many legal challenges. She was even sent to prison for many years starting in 2018.

Her son, Tarique Rahman, later became a leader in the BNP. Her life remains a major part of the history of Bangladesh.
