The Abadan Crisis was a big disagreement about oil. It happened between 1951 and 1954.

This fight was between Iran and the United Kingdom. It changed how oil was managed in the Middle East. The main issue was a company called the AIOC. This company was controlled by the British. It was a very important asset for Britain. The crisis showed how much oil mattered to different nations.

In Iran, a leader named Mohammad Mosaddegh wanted change. He believed the old oil deals were unfair and illegal. In March 1951, the Iranian Parliament voted to nationalize the oil. This meant the Iranian government took control of the oil assets.

Many people in Iran were very happy about this. They wanted to use the oil money to fight poverty. They saw it as a way to protect their national wealth.

Britain did not agree with this choice. They thought the move was like theft. To put pressure on Iran, Britain used economic sanctions. They stopped selling things like sugar and steel to Iran. They also took most of their workers away from Abadan. Only about 300 administrators stayed behind in the oil fields.

Iran tried to find new experts from other countries. Many nations like Sweden and West Germany said no. Only Italy agreed to help the Iranian industry.

Things got even harder for Iran at sea. The British Royal Navy began to stop oil tankers. In July 1952, they stopped an Italian ship named the Rose Mary. They said the oil on the ship was stolen property. This made other companies afraid to carry Iranian oil. Because of this, Iran could not sell much oil to the world. This stopped the money from flowing into the country.

In August 1953, a major change happened in Iran. The UK and the USA worked together on a plan. This plan was called Operation Ajax. It was a coup to remove Mosaddegh from power. They helped Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah, take control again.

By 1954, a new group of companies ran the oil. This group was called an international consortium. Iran received 25% of the profits from the oil. This was a small increase from the 20% they had before.
