The Suez Canal is a very important water path.

It connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean. This path provides the shortest ocean link between those two areas. Many ships use it to carry oil and other goods. In 1875, Egypt sold its shares in the canal company to Britain. Later, Britain took control of the canal and the country. The canal was a vital part of many global trade routes.

In 1956, things began to change in Egypt. A leader named Gamal Abdel Nasser led a revolution.

This movement replaced the Egyptian monarchy with a republic. Nasser wanted Egypt to be independent and strong. Earlier that year, he nationalized the Suez Canal. This meant the Egyptian government took control of the canal. This decision upset the United Kingdom and France. They had long controlled the canal and its operations.

Three countries decided to go to war in 1956.

Israel invaded Egypt on October 29. They wanted to open the Straits of Tiran for their ships. Israel was worried about an Egyptian blockade. On October 31, Britain and France joined the fight. They wanted to remove Nasser from power. They also wanted to regain control of the canal.

This event is known as the Suez Crisis.

Many powerful nations reacted to the fighting.

The United States and the Soviet Union both applied pressure. The United Nations also asked the countries to stop. These groups wanted the invasion to end quickly. Because of this pressure, the three countries withdrew from Egypt. Israel stayed in the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula for four months. The canal remained closed from October 1956 until March 1957.

The crisis changed how the world worked. It showed that Britain and France could not act alone. They now needed the consent of the United States. The United Nations created an emergency force to patrol the border.

A man named Lester B. Pearson helped solve the conflict. He worked with the UN to find a way to peace. For his hard work, he received a Nobel Peace Prize. This event helped shape the modern Middle East and global politics.
