2060 Chiron is a unique object in our outer Solar System.

It orbits the Sun in the space between Saturn and Uranus. This object is a member of a special group called centaurs. Centaurs are bodies that orbit between the asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt. Chiron was the very first centaur that scientists ever identified. Because it is so unusual, it is hard to classify. It is known as both a minor planet and a comet.

Chiron works in a way that confuses scientists. In 1989, it started acting like a comet. A comet is a space object that can grow a tail. This happens when it develops a coma, which is a cloud of gas. Chiron has a coma filled with gases like methane and carbon dioxide.

It also has rings around it. These rings are thin circles of material. Scientists found the rings by watching Chiron pass in front of stars. These rings can change and grow over time.

Learning about Chiron took many years of careful study. Charles Kowal discovered it on November 1, 1977. He used images taken at the Palomar Observatory. At first, people thought it was just a regular asteroid. Some even called it the tenth planet in the news. Later, scientists looked at old photos from 1895. These images helped them figure out its path through space. They realized it had actually been near the Sun back in 1945.

There are many interesting facts about this distant world. Chiron is roughly 220 km in diameter.

Its size estimates have changed as tools got better. For example, the Spitzer Space Telescope estimated it was 233 km in 2007. It takes about 5.918 hours for Chiron to spin once. Its orbit is very stretched out, which scientists call highly eccentric. It travels from just inside Saturn's orbit to near Uranus.

Chiron helps us understand how the Solar System is organized. It shows us that the line between asteroids and comets is fuzzy. Most centaurs do not have stable orbits. The gravity of giant planets like Saturn will eventually move them. Chiron likely came from the Kuiper belt long ago. It might even become a short-period comet in a million years. This makes it a bridge between different types of space objects.
