Gonggong is a distant dwarf planet located in the scattered disc. This is a region of space far beyond the planet Neptune.

It is currently the sixth-farthest known object in our Solar System. Gonggong is quite large, with a diameter of about 1,930 kilometers. This makes it similar in size to Charon, the moon of Pluto. Because of its size, it may be in hydrostatic equilibrium. This means it has enough mass to be shaped like a sphere.

This world has a very strange and extreme path around the Sun. Its orbit is highly eccentric, which means it is not a perfect circle.

It also has a high inclination of 30.9 degrees. This means its path is tilted compared to most other planets. Gonggong is in a 3:10 orbital resonance with Neptune. This means Gonggong completes three orbits for every ten orbits Neptune makes. One full trip around the Sun takes Gonggong 547 years.

Astronomers discovered this object in July 2007. Megan Schwamb, Michael Brown, and David Rabinowitz found it at Palomar Observatory. They used the Samuel Oschin telescope for their work.

Schwamb used a method called blinking to find it. She compared images to see how objects moved. The discovery was part of her doctoral thesis. The team announced the discovery to the world in January 2009. It was given a provisional name because it was found in late July.

The surface of Gonggong is very red in color. This red comes from organic compounds called tholins. These form when solar radiation hits methane on the surface.

There is also water ice on the surface. This suggests cryovolcanism happened in the distant past. This is when water erupted from the inside and froze. Gonggong also has a moon named Xiangliu. This moon might cause Gonggong to rotate slowly. It takes about 22 hours for Gonggong to spin once.

Choosing a name for the dwarf planet was a special event. In 2019, the discoverers held an online poll for the public. People could vote for three different names. The name Gonggong won with 46 percent of the votes.

It is named after a Chinese water god. In mythology, Gonggong was responsible for floods and chaos. The name was officially accepted in early 2020. This helped give a permanent identity to this distant, red world.
