Charon is the largest moon of the dwarf planet Pluto.

It is a very large moon compared to its parent body. Charon has about one-eighth the mass of Pluto. Its diameter is also about half the size of Pluto. This large size makes it the sixth-largest trans-Neptunian object known. It is also the twelfth-largest natural satellite in our whole Solar System. Because Charon is so big, the two worlds act like a pair.

The way these two worlds move is quite special. They are tidally locked to each other. This means they always show the same face to one another. They orbit a shared center point called a barycenter. In this system, the barycenter actually lies outside of Pluto. This happens because Charon has so much mass. This setup makes the Pluto–Charon system a dwarf double planet. It is one of only a few such systems known.

An astronomer named James Christy discovered Charon in 1978. He worked at the United States Naval Observatory. He was looking at highly magnified photos of Pluto. He noticed a slight bulge that appeared periodically. This bulge was actually the moon moving in front of Pluto. The International Astronomical Union announced the discovery on July 7, 1978. Christy chose the name Charon for the moon. He picked it because it was a figure from mythology.

Charon has a very distinct look at its north pole. There is a reddish-brown cap on that side. This cap is made of tholins. Tholins are organic macromolecules, which are large molecules made of carbon and other elements. These may come from methane or nitrogen gases. These gases might come from cryovolcanic eruptions on the moon. They could also move over from Pluto's atmosphere.

Scientists have many ideas about how Charon formed. Some think a large object hit Pluto 4.5 billion years ago. This collision might have created the moon from the debris. This is called the hot start model. Other scientists suggest a cold start model. This model says the moon formed more gradually. We learned much more about the surface in 2015. The New Horizons spacecraft flew very close to the moon. It sent back many amazing details about the world.
