Jupiter trojan

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Jupiter trojans are a large group of asteroids that share the same orbit as Jupiter. These space rocks travel around the Sun along the same path as the giant planet. They are very important for helping us understand how our Solar System formed. Scientists think these asteroids were captured during the early stages of the Solar System. They might have been pulled into place when the giant planets moved around.

These asteroids stay in two stable spots called Lagrange points. These points are located 60 degrees ahead of Jupiter and 60 degrees behind it. A mathematician named Joseph-Louis Lagrange predicted these spots in 1772. He studied how a small body moves near a large planet. The asteroids do not stay perfectly still at these points. Instead, they librate, which means they move slowly around the spot in a special path. This path can look like a tadpole or a horseshoe shape.

Humans have been finding these asteroids for a long time. The first accepted discovery was in February 1906. An astronomer named Max Wolf found the first one at his observatory. He named the asteroid 588 Achilles. Later, August Kopff found two more asteroids in 1906 and 1907. These were named 624 Hektor and 617 Patroclus.

By the year 1938, scientists had found 11 of these objects. As telescopes got better, the number of known trojans grew very fast.

There are many interesting facts about these space rocks. More than 15,300 Jupiter trojans have been found so far. Many of them look dark and reddish to our instruments. Scientists think they might be coated in tholins. These are organic materials made by radiation from the Sun. The density of these rocks can range from 0.8 to 2.5 g/cm³. There are likely about 10,000 asteroids larger than 1 km in this group. This is about the same number as the main asteroid belt.

We use special names for these asteroids to help tell them apart. Most are named after heroes from the Trojan War. The group ahead of Jupiter is called the Greek camp. The group behind Jupiter is called the Trojan camp. Because we have found so many, we have run out of ancient names. In 2018, the International Astronomical Union changed the rules. Now, smaller asteroids can be named after Olympic athletes. Some asteroids even carry the names of famous swimmers or runners.
