The 1980 Summer Olympics, officially known as Moscow 1980, were a massive international multi-sport event. They took place in Moscow, within the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union. The games ran from July 19 to August 3, 1980. This event was significant because it marked the final presidency of Michael Morris, the 3rd Baron Killanin. He was soon to be succeeded by Juan Antonio Samaranch. These games represented a moment of intense global tension and athletic achievement.

Selecting a host city is a complex process managed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In October 1974, the 75th IOC Session met in Vienna, Austria, to decide the location. Only two cities submitted bids: Moscow and Los Angeles. Moscow won the selection with 39 votes. Los Angeles received 20 votes, with two abstentions. This decision meant Moscow would host the 1980 games, while Los Angeles eventually hosted the 1984 games.

However, the 1980 Games were defined by a massive political boycott. This boycott was led by the United States to protest the 1979 Soviet–Afghan War. President Jimmy Carter issued an ultimatum in January 1980. He demanded that Soviet troops withdraw from Afghanistan within one month. When this did not happen, 66 nations and regions chose not to participate. This resulted in only 80 nations being represented. This was the smallest number of participating nations since 1956.

Because of the boycott, the competition was very different from other years. Many countries cited economic reasons for staying home. Others, like Iran, boycotted because the Islamic Conference condemned the Soviet invasion. Some nations, like the People's Republic of China and Taiwan, did not participate for different political reasons. Israel also boycotted due to Soviet policies. Some athletes still chose to compete despite their governments. They marched in the Opening Ceremony under the Olympic Flag instead of national flags.

The absence of many nations changed the medal results significantly. The Soviet Union and East Germany dominated the competition. Together, they won 127 out of the 203 available gold medals. This created the most skewed medal tally since the 1904 Games. While 36 countries still earned medals, the concentration of success was very high. The boycott impacted the competitiveness in many sports, including swimming, track and field, and boxing.

Despite the political drama, the athletes performed at an incredible level. There were 203 events, which was more than any previous Olympics. The games saw 36 world records and 74 Olympic records set. In total, Olympic records were broken 241 times. World records were beaten 97 times. For example, the runner Miruts Yifter won gold in both the 5,000 and 10,000 metre races. In archery, Tomi Poikolainen won the men's gold by only three points.

There were also serious concerns regarding drug use during these games. While no athletes were caught at the time, reports later suggested widespread issues. Some officials allegedly worked to undermine anti-doping tests. A 1989 report claimed many medal winners used various substances. A scientist named Manfred Donike used a new technique to test urine. He found that 20 percent of his specimens showed abnormal testosterone levels. This included sixteen gold medal winners. This discovery helped change how the IOC conducts official testing.

Hosting such a massive event required an enormous amount of money. The official report stated that total expenditures were US$1,350,000,000. To help pay for this, the committee organized Olympic lotteries. These lotteries covered 25 percent of the total costs. Later studies by the Oxford Olympics Study estimated the actual cost was much higher. In 2015 dollars, the cost was roughly US$6.3 billion. This included building venues, the Olympic village, and media centers.
