Most Summer Olympics occur once every four years. They serve as a way for nations to compete through athletic skill. This tradition helps promote international understanding through the medium of sport.

Organizing the games involves many complex steps. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) manages the entire process. The IOC was founded in 1894 by Pierre de Coubertin. He was a French historian and a pedagogue, which is a teacher. He wanted to use sports to bridge gaps between different countries. To reward excellence, the games use a specific medal system. This system was introduced during the 1904 Olympics. Gold medals are given for first place. Silver medals go to second place. Bronze medals are awarded to the third-place finisher.

The scale of the Olympics has changed significantly since the beginning. The inaugural modern games were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. At that time, there were only 42 events. Fewer than 250 male competitors participated from 14 different nations. In contrast, the 2021 Summer Olympics featured 339 events. There were 11,319 competitors representing 206 nations. Almost half of those athletes were women. This shows how much the games have grown in diversity and size.

History shows a clear path of expansion and change. In 1896, female athletes were not officially allowed to compete. However, a woman named Stamata Revithi ran the marathon course alone. Women first officially participated in the 1900 Paris Games. They competed in five sports, including golf and tennis. Since then, female participation has increased dramatically. The games have also seen changes in specific rules. For example, the marathon distance became standardized. It is now 42.195 kilometers, or 26 miles and 385 yards. This distance was chosen in 1908 to ensure the race finished in front of the British royal family.

The United States has hosted four times: 1904, 1932, 1984, and 1996. Los Angeles will host for a fifth time in 2028. Paris and London have both hosted three times. Paris hosted in 1900, 1924, and 2024. London hosted in 1908, 1948, and 2012.

Other cities like Tokyo and Athens have hosted twice. Tokyo was the first city outside of Europe or English-speaking nations to host twice. It is also the largest city to ever host the games.

Success in the Olympics can be measured by medal counts. The United States leads the all-time medal count. They have topped the medal table on 19 separate occasions. Great Britain is one of only three countries to win at least one medal in every Summer Games. Great Britain is also the only country to win at least one gold medal in every edition. Australia and France are the other two countries with medals in every games. The USSR, or Soviet Union, topped the table seven times. This includes the 1992 Unified Team.

Hosting the Olympics has a major impact on a city. It requires and accelerates large investments in city infrastructure. Leaders use the games to strengthen their city's global integration. It also helps improve economic competitiveness. The games can even reach new parts of the world. The 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro were the first in South America. They were also the first held during a local winter season.
